We Return to New Mexico
On our first go-round in the Southwest, we skimmed through New Mexico relatively quickly on our way to Zion National Park. This time we wandered a bit more, including to two national parks and a particularly great campground.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Just up the highway from Guadalupe, Carlsbad was a great experience. I didn’t bother bringing my camera down into the caverns, but my phone managed to do a decent job in the incredibly low lighting.
Bottomless Lakes State Park
This park outside of Roswell has a bunch of pothole lakes, some caused by springs and some caused by sinkholes.
Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument
Oryx
The Southwest has several species that were brought over for hunting and then became invasive. We’ve seen the wild Russian boars and Nilgai (which are from India and look like a cross between a horse and a cow), and now here’s the Oryx.
Aguirre Spring Campground
One of the most scenic campgrounds we’ve stayed in, high in the foothills of the Organ Mountains.
City of Rocks State Park
This is the second City of Rocks we’ve visited (the other being City of Rocks National Reserve in Idaho), which isn’t a lot but still: come up with some original names!
