Big Bend National Park
I think this is the most underrated National Park we’ve been to. It’s big, beautiful, far away from anything, and devoid of crowds. We spent 5 nights total at 3 different campgrounds, and I probably could’ve done 5 more. Maybe I was just starved for mountains after the long flat drive out of Florida, around the Gulf Coast, and along the Rio Grande. We need to come back in a jacked-up truck and go tooling around in the backcountry.
Rio Grande Village Campground
I managed to drag myself out of bed on a cold, cold morning for a short hike up to an overlook outside of the Rio Grande Village, and the sacrifice of sleep paid off. These four images are all from that same morning; it was a great experience to just sit in one spot for a couple hours photographing the changing light.
Boquillas Canyon
Birds
There were not as many birds around as I was expecting, but there were a ton of Greater Roadrunners throughout the park. They’re a lot of fun to watch.
Chisos Basin
Emory Peak Trail
This was our biggest hike in the park, a 10-mile, 2600-ft climb to the highest point in Big Bend. It felt good to get some elevation under our boots, and the sights were great the whole way up.
