Congaree National Park

Congaree is pretty small as far as National Parks go; it’s basically one big swamp that you can see most of in a day. We visited right before Thanksgiving, after waiting out several days of rain at a surprisingly nice boat launch near Columbia, South Carolina.

The photography experience was interesting. It’s very messy in there, and I always struggle to simplify and compose in most forests. At the same time, the light was constantly changing, so scenes that looked dull one second were beautiful the next. Editing was also a struggle, I was really uncertain how to approach these images. I uploaded everything to this blog draft and let it sit for a week, and as I post this now I like what I see. And if that changes in the future, too late, this blog is done!

FYI, the little knobby stumps you see in some of these images are called “tree knees”. There’s not consensus in the scientific community about what they do, but the name is fun.
