Catching up with the Sandhill Cranes

If you’ve ever wondered where Sandhill Cranes go in the winter: it’s Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area in southern Arizona. Thirty THOUSAND cranes winter at this small wetland every winter, and it’s a sensory overload. They’re SO LOUD, and there are SO MANY of them. We got there in the early afternoon when most of them were off foraging, so we got to see them return in what I can only describe as swarms. You’d just see these massive black clouds miles in the distance, that would eventually resolve into hundreds of cranes flying directly at you. The really funny thing would be seeing a flock of fifty cranes come in for a landing, and then one individual would break off and go land somewhere else. What’s that guy’s deal?

Anyway, in two hour-long visits to the pond I took 1100 photos.

I made a little video to give you a better idea of how many dang cranes were flying around.
