Back to New York

After stopping in Rhode Island to visit family and ripping across Connecticut, we were in southeast New York, which apparently New Yorkers refer to as “upstate New York” just because it isn’t the city. New York state had already provided some great hiking on this eastern leg of our trip, and our jog across on the way south kept the streak going.

Hudson Heights State Park

Walkway Over the Hudson

A high pedestrian bridge over the Hudson River, with views of Poughkeepsie and the Mid-Hudson Bridge.

Mohonk Preserve

We almost didn’t do this hike because they charge FIFTEEN AMERICAN DOLLARS…PER PERSON to access the preserve. I’m glad we shelled out because we got to see peak fall color in an absolutely incredible place. The preserve itself is a maze of hiking trails and historic carriage roads, but you can climb up to a plateau on the neighboring Mohonk Mountain House property, which overlooks the surrounding area for the best views. Then you can trespass (?) through the hotel to loop around the VERY inviting-looking mountain lake and visit all the weird little lookout shelters.
